In 2006 two of our supporters nominated the Canterbury and District Recorder for the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. The award is intended to recognise and reward excellence in voluntary activities carried out by groups in the community. Most of those involved with our Charity, at the time, were unaware of the nomination.
In 2006 from hundreds of nominations there were 104 awards made nationwide but only three in Kent. We were surprised and honoured to be one of them.
The engraved crystal award and a certificate, signed by Her Majesty the Queen, have pride of place in our Studio.
In 2010 again our impact in the local community was recognised by the presentation of the Lord Mayor's Award to Frank Harris. Frank has been involved with the Canterbury and District Recorder for over 20 years. Not only is he the Charity Treasurer but visits most of the new listeners to ensure they are comfortable with the USB Audio Player. He also edits the news and reads both the news and additional programmes. He is the focus of liaison with our listeners and has become the voice of the 'Recorder'.
Derek Fowler was awarded the Canterbury Rotary Club Award in 2013 for his service to the Canterbury and District Recorder especially for the introduction of digital technology. Derek has been the Chairman since 2007 and guided the Charity from cassette tape technology to recording onto USB Flash Drives in 2010.
